Ravenwing's voices helped her find a wounded soldier, her true love. Together they travel across the plains braving a tornado, flood, and renegades to get to Washington and help the war effort.
EXCERPT
“Hide! Run,” the voices said urgently.
She slammed her heels into the mares’ sides, and the startled horse sprinted away.
“Mark! Run! Run for your life,” she screamed. She leaned over Bob, and pinned him to the horse with her body as they headed for the dry creek bed. Mark was right behind her; he slapped the reins on the buckskin’s flanks, spurring his own mount to greater speed. The two horses strained every muscle; terror gave them wings.
Mark glanced over his shoulder at the menacing clouds, and a swirling finger of danger hung from the bottom of one of them.
“Tornado,” he yelled as loud as he could, needlessly, though, as Ravenwing was ahead, her dappled mare speedier than the heavier cavalry horse.
They raced across the flat plain, the horses pounding hooves ate up the ground, and thankfully the arroyo neared, but it seemed the storm was moving faster than they were. The wind was picking up speed, and it flattened the grass before them with its’ growing force.
On and on the horses fled, their muscles strained to their utmost. They needed no urging for greater speed. They ran for their lives, and the Bobcat pinned under Ravenwing yowled frantically. He dug his claws into her leather dress, and struggled to poke his head from under the woman. His amber eyes dilated; he could smell the fear emanating from the horse and rider.
They made it to the arroyo just as the wind began in earnest. Their horses slid to a stop, snorting in panic, and the two riders slid from their backs as one.
