EXCERPT

"I had wanted a clock radio for some time, but we could not afford one. I had asked for one numerous times but to no avail. Then, on August 20, 1950, my eleventh birthday, I got it! Mom and Dad had gotten it at Shafto's Appliance store down the road. Actually, they gave it to me a couple of days before my birthday, which was very unusual. I liked it a lot and couldn't wait to set the alarm and play the radio. I didn't know at the time that it wasn't paid for and never would be. I didn't find out for years. All I knew was that I liked it and that I was happy. After I set the alarm, it would wake me up to music in the morning. I felt good and things were going along fine.

Then, two days after my birthday, it happened. My whole world came crashing down. BANG! BANG! Mercifully, my brother and I did not hear the shots. To this day, we don't know for sure exactly what happened. Though I am writing this some fifty-eight years later, I still have a problem talking or thinking about it. The easy life was over in seconds. The hard Part began. It was August 22, 1950. It was early morning. My brother Carl got up first and went looking for Mom because he wanted breakfast. Mom usually got up before us and normally had to wake us up. It was unusual for her not to be up now. Carl looked all over the house to find her. She was nowhere to be found. Instead, he found Dad lying on his back in bed. It was not a sight for a fourteen-year-old to see. We did not know it then, but Dad had been shot in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun. He had no head left.

There were just pieces of skin and bone laying on what was left of is pillow.
