Cat has issues with Glastonbury, the town at the heart of what once was called the Vale of Avalon. The power that lives there broke through her barriers and awoke her talents, but the experience terrified her and ever since then she has refused to let those talents manifest. But now, five years on, she reluctantly goes back to Glastonbury.
Philippe Alexandre is a detective with the Police Judiciaire based in Vannes, France. He is undercover in Glastonbury to follow up on new information a witness has sent about an old murder that happened near Vannes. He meets Cat and is as drawn to her as she is to him. He discovers that Cat knows his witness, and decides to use their mutual attraction to pump her for information.
Before long, Cat’s long suppressed talents are forcing themselves forward and she realizes that the visions she sees are linked to Philippe’s case. Together they must save the innocent before the killer can attack again and next time Cat will be the target.

EXCERPT

Suddenly vertigo rocked Cat and the images of two Tarot cards exploded in her mind - the Tower crossed by the Moon. She swore under her breath, forced her burning eyes to focus on the road at her feet and they were gone. Something had thrust the pictures into her mind but it hadn’t felt like the Tor. That was still there - always there, a constant pressure that only changed by degree. Unless Philippe was close by.

“No, thanks,” she said, trying to sound casual. “This is as close to that damned thing as I’m prepared to get at the moment.” Back in control again - hopefully - she took a deep breath and leaned her arms on the field gate. There was a herd of sheep not far from her, almost luminous against the dark grass and she wondered vaguely if counting them would keep the looming presence out of her mind. “Mark,” she said and was startled to hear her own voice. “Maeve can see walls about you. Shadows. Did you build them, or was it someone else?”

Without a word Mark turned on his heel and walked quickly away. At the same time Cat abruptly knew he must not leave. “Wait!” she called and sprinted after him, grabbed an arm and spun him round. “Come on,” she said and did not know how the moonlight silvered the structure of her face and flared in her eyes. “Climb the Tor with me.” She backed away, drawing Mark with her like a man mesmerized, until they were over the stile and on the path.

“I thought you said...” he began uncertainly.

“I was wrong,” Cat said and wished herself elsewhere. But it was no longer possible. She could not let Mark go because if she did the shadows would claim him- ”Humor me. I’m a little crazy tonight.” Which was true enough, a small sane voice muttered in her skull. What a time and place to go barking mad.
